Toshodai-ji Temple is an implicit style and elegant design Buddhist temple in Nara Japan.
Toshodai-ji Temple was constructed in the Nara Period (710-794) by the Chinese priest Jianzhen (called Ganjin in Japan), who arrived in Nara in 754 at the invitation of Emperor Shomu and was given the land by the court to construct the temple in 759.
The Kondo or hall is a magnificent example of Nara (Tempyo) architecture and is designated as a National Treasure. It houses a large image of Birushana, the Cosmic Buddha (also a National Treasure), a large statue of Yakushi Nyorai and Senju (thousand-armed) Kannon.
Next to the image of the Birushana are Bon-ten, Taishaku-ten and Shi-tenno – all of which are designated National Treasures. Directly behind the Kondo is the Kodo, a lecture hall which houses an image of Miroku Nyorai which is also designated an Important Cultural Property.
